by Geetha G T – Our gardens are incomplete without a rose plant. Roses have for quite some time been cherished for their appearance and their broadly aesthetic aroma. As one of the most common flowers to grace any garden, it’s no big surprise that roses have prevailed for a long time with a range of colors and fragrances.
ಯಾರಿಗೆ ಗುಲಾಬಿ ಅಂದ್ರೆ ಎಷ್ಟ ಇಲ್ಲ ಹೇಳಿ? ಗುಲಾಬಿ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಇರೋ ಕೈ ತೋಟ/ಉದ್ಯಾನವನ ಅಪೂರ್ಣ. ಅನಾದಿ ಕಾಲದಿಂದಲೂ ಗುಲಾಬಿ ತನ್ನ ಅಮೋಘವಾದ ಸುವಾಸನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸೌಂದರ್ಯದಿಂದ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನ ಆವರಿಸಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿದೆ. ಮಾರ್ಕೆಟ್, ಉದ್ಯಾನವನ, ಕೈ ತೋಟ ಎಲ್ಲೇ ನೋಡಿ, ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ವಿಧವಾದ ಹೂವುಗಳಿದ್ದರೂ ಕೂಡ ಗುಲಾಬಿ ತನ್ನ ಅಗ್ರ ಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದಿದೆ.
First, what is a sucker?
ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ, ಸಕ್ಕರ್ ಏನಿದು?
In the case of a rose plant, suckers are developments that spring out of the hard rootstock of grafted rose plant. According to me they are as beautiful as our desirable rose variety. They are light green in colour and they are highly robust (please see the below picture) so, I call them ‘survival of the fitter’! You want to know why? Please keep on reading!
ಸಕ್ಕರ್ಸ್ ಒಂದು ಒರಟಾದ ಸಸ್ಯದ ಭಾಗ, ಅದು ಕಸಿಮಾಡಿದ ಗುಲಾಬಿ ಸಸ್ಯದ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾದ ಬೇರುಕಾಂಡದಿಂದ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಅವು ನಮ್ಮ ಕಸಿಮಾಡಿದ ಗುಲಾಬಿ ಗಿಡದಷ್ಟೇ ಸುಂದರ (ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಕೆಳಗಿನ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ) ಮತ್ತು ಅವು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಗಟ್ಟಿ,/ದೃಢ ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾನು ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ‘ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ಬದುಕುಳಿಯುವಿಕೆ’ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತೇನೆ !! ಏಕೆ ಎಂದು ನೀವು ತಿಳಿಯಬೇಕೆ? ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಓದುವುದನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಸಿ !!
Here is the rose plant from our terrace garden. You can observe grafted rose branches from a desirable variety, typically not hardy enough to endure in all climatic conditions. Hence, it is grafted onto another rose variety called the ‘root stock’, which is exceptionally robust to keep the entire rose plant alive in different environments. The commonly used root-stock rose variety is Dr. Huey and in some cases Rosa multiflora. The joint where the desirable rose variety has budded onto the root stock is called a ‘graft union’.
ಇಲ್ಲಿರೋ ಗುಲಾಬಿ ಗಿಡ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೈ ತೋಟದ್ದು. ಕಸಿಮಾಡಿದ ಗುಲಾಬಿ ಕವಲು‌ಗಳನ್ನು ನೀವು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು, ಇದು ನಮಗೆ ಬೇಕಾದ ಪ್ರಭೇದದ ಗುಲಾಬಿ. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಹವಾಮಾನ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆಯುವ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಈ ಗಿಡಕ್ಕೆ ಇರದ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ, ಇದನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಜಾತಿಯ ಗುಲಾಬಿ ಪ್ರಭೇದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಸಿಮಾಡಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಅದನ್ನ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ‘ಬೇರುಕಾಂಡ’ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಈಗ ನಮಗೆ ಬೇಕಾದ ಗುಲಾಬಿ ಹಾಗು ಬೇರುಕಾಂಡದ ಜಾತಿಯ ಗುಲಾಬಿ ಎರಡು ಸೇರಿ ಸದೃಢವಾದ ಒಂದು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಗುಲಾಬಿ ಗಿಡ ನಮಗೆ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಬೇರುಕಾಂಡ ವಿಧದ ಗಿಡ ತುಂಬ ಗಟ್ಟಿ ಹಾಗು ದೃಢ ಯಾವುದೇ ಪರಿಸರಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊಂದಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಇದಕ್ಕಿದೆ. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುವ ಬೇರುಕಾಂಡ ಗುಲಾಬಿಯ ಪ್ರಭೇದಗಳು ಈ ರೀತಿಯಾಗಿವೆ, ಡಾ. ಹ್ಯೂ ಮತ್ತು ಕೆಲವು ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ರೋಸಾ ಮಲ್ಟಿಫ್ಲೋರಾ.
The root-stock remains underneath the graft union and produces roots and our desirable rose variety stays overhead and produces beautiful flowers.
ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಅಂದುಕೊಂಡ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲೆ ಆದ್ರೆ, ಬೇರುಕಾಂಡ ಕಸಿ ಮಾಡಿದ ಜಾಗದಿಂದ ಕೆಳಗಡೆ ಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇರುಬಿಟ್ಟು ಮತ್ತು ನಮ್ಮ ಕಸಿಮಾಡಿದ/ಬೇಕಾದ ಪ್ರಭೇದದ ಗುಲಾಬಿ ಮಣ್ಣಿನ ಮೇಲ್ಬಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಕವಲೊಡೆದು ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಹೂವುಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.
But this was not always the case. Sometimes, the root stock bursts out into super healthy branches just below the graft union by sucking the nutrients from the desirable variety. We term these branches ‘suckers’. If we fail to remove the sucker as soon as we encounter it, ultimately the survival of the fitter (sucker) will kill the desirable rose variety above.
ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು ಅಂದುಕೊಳ್ಳೋದೇ ಒಂದು ಅದು ಆಗೋದೇ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು. ಅಪರೂಪವಾಗಿ, ಇದ್ದಕ್ಕಿದಂತೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಬೇರುಕಾಂಡ ತನ್ನ ಬೇರು ಬಿಡೋ ಕಾರ್ಯದ ಜೊತೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಕಸಿಮಾಡಿದ ಗಿಡದ ಜೊತೆ ಪೈಪೋಟಿಗಿಳಿದುಬಿಡುತ್ತೆ. ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪೋಷಕಾಂಶವನ್ನ ಕಸಿಮಾಡಿದ ಗಿಡದಿಂದ ಹೀರಿ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಅದನ್ನೇ ಕೊಂದು ತನ್ನ ಇರುವಿಕೆಯನ್ನ ಗಟ್ಟಿಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ನಾನು ಇದನ್ನು ‘ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ಬದುಕುಳಿಯುವಿಕೆ’ ಎಂದು ನಾಮಕರಣ ಮಾಡಿರುವುದು. ಏನಂತೀರಾ ಸರಿ ತಾನೇ?
This is what happens (see the below picture) if you don’t remove sucker properly in the first place. In just couple of days you will end up meeting your new baby suckers. Happy parenting!
ನೀವು ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ಸಕ್ಕರ್ ಅನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ತೆಗೆದುಹಾಕದಿದ್ದರೆ ಇದೇ ಆಗೋದು. ಕೇವಲ ಒಂದೆರಡು ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನೀವು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಹೊಸ ಮರಿ ಸಕ್ಕರ್ ಅನ್ನು ನೋಡ್ತಿರ. ಹ್ಯಾಪಿ ಪೇರೆಂಟಿಂಗ್ !!
You need to follow the sucker and find out the initial growing point then remove it right at the point of contact. Then your desirable plant is all set to grow back. Happy Gardening!
ನೀವು ಸಕ್ಕರ್ ನ ಆರಂಭಿಕ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯ ಜಾಗವನ್ನ ಕಂಡುಹಿಡಿಯಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಯಾವುದೇ ಹಂತದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ ತೆಗೆದುಹಾಕಿ. ನಂತರ ನೀವು ಬಯಸಿದ ಕಸಿಮಾಡಿದ ಗುಲಾಬಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಬೆಳೆಯಲು ಸಿದ್ದವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಹ್ಯಾಪಿ ರೋಸಿಂಗ್ !!
How can you differentiate the desirable variety from the sucker? Just by counting the leaves. If the roses have seven leaves then unquestionably it is a sucker. Alert!
ಕಸಿಮಾಡಿದ ಪ್ರಭೇದದ ಗುಲಾಬಿಗು ಹಾಗು ಸಕ್ಕರ್ ಗು ಇರೋ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ ಏನು? ತುಂಬ ಸುಲಭ! ಬರಿ ಎಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಏಣಿಸಿದರೆ ಆಯಿತು ನೋಡಿ!! ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೇ ಗಿಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ರೀತಿಯ ಗಿಡಗಳೇನಾದ್ರೂ ಕಂಡ್ರೆ ಮೊದಲು ಗುಲಾಬಿ ಎಲೆಗಳನ್ನ ಏಣಿಸಿ. ಏಳು ಎಲೆಗಳಿದರೆ ನಿಸ್ಸಂದೇಹವಾಗಿ ಅದು ಸಕ್ಕರ್. ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆ !!!
