ಎಲೆ ಕತ್ತರಿಸುವ ಇರುವೆ ಹಾಗು ಅಣಬೆಯ ಅವಿನಾಭಾವ ಸಂಬಂಧ

By Geetha G T  – The Leafcutter ants learned to farm 50 million years ago!  They are specialists in growing Fungus as their much-loved crop of choice. They slice out bits of leaves and carry them back home by making neat columns of parading green soldiers. They don’t use these leaves directly for feeding purposes like other phytophagous insects. Instead, they use the leaves to farm Lepiotaceae fungus, which they cultivate in their nest. The plant polymers present in the green leaves are broken down by the fungus, which ant digestive enzymes are not able to do. The only food source for leafcutter ant is the fungus. If the fungus fails to flourish, the whole colony can say goodbye to life. Without their farmers, the fungus also does not endure. Like other ant communities, the leafcutter ants also collect food continuously, feed the young ones, cultivate fungus, defend the colony, and take care of their queen. To accomplish all these different types of tasks effectively, there are separate ant castes that do each task separately for the colony. ಎಲೆ ಕತ್ತರಿಸುವ ಇರುವೆಗಳು 50 ಮಿಲಿಯನ್ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಮುಂಚೆಯೇ ಕೃಷಿಯನ್ನು ಕಲಿತ್ತಿದ್ದ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಜೀವಿಗಳು! ಅವುಗಳು ತಮಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಇಷ್ಟವಾದ ಶಿಲೀಂಧ್ರವನ್ನು ಕೃಷಿ ಮಾಡುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ತಜ್ಞರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಎಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ತುಂಡುಗಳನ್ನಾಗಿ ಕತ್ತರಿಸಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಗೂಡಿಗೆ ವಾಪಸು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡುಹೋಗುವಾಗ ಇವು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸುವ ಉದ್ದನೆಯ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಸಿರು ಸೈನಿಕರಂತೆ ಕಾಣುವ ಇವುಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡುವುದೇ ಒಂದು ಚೆಂದ. ಈ ಎಲೆಗಳನ್ನ ಇವು ತಿನ್ನೋದಿಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಸಾಗಿಸುತ್ತಿವೆ ಅಂದುಕೊಂಡಿರಾ? ಇಲ್ಲ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ. ಈ ಎಲೆಗಳು ಅಣಬೆ ಕೃಷಿಗಾಗಿ! ಇರುವೆಯ ಜೀರ್ಣಕಾರಿ ಕಿಣ್ವಗಳಿಂದ ಕರಗಿಸಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗದ ಸಸ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿರೋ ಪಾಲಿಮರ್ ಗಳನ್ನು ಶಿಲಿಂಧ್ರಗಳು ಕರಗಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಇವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಇರುವ ಒಂದೇ ಒಂದು ಆಹಾರದ ಮೂಲವೆಂದರೆ ಶಿಲೀಂಧ್ರ. ಈ ಶಿಲೀಂಧ್ರಗಳ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಏರುಪೇರಾದರೂ ಇದು ಇಡೀ ಇರುವೆ ಗೂಡಿನ ಯೋಗಕ್ಷೇಮದಮೇಲೆ ಬಹಳ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಪರಿಣಾಮ ಬೀರುತ್ತದೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಶಿಲಿಂಧ್ರವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಇರುವೆಗಳಿಲ್ಲ, ಇರುವೆಗಳಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಶಿಲೀಂಧ್ರಗಳಿಲ್ಲ! ಇತರ ಇರುವೆ ಸಮುದಾಯಗಳಂತೆ, ಎಲೆ ಕತ್ತರಿಸುವ ಇರುವೆಗಳು ಕೂಡ ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ  ಆಹಾರವನ್ನುಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸುವುದು, ಮರಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಊಟೋಪಚಾರದ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ, ಶಿಲೀಂಧ್ರವನ್ನು ಕೃಷಿ ಮಾಡುವುದು, ವಸಾಹತು ರಕ್ಷಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ರಾಣಿ ಕಾಳಜಿಯನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಈ ಎಲ್ಲ ರೀತಿಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಸಾಧಿಸಲು, ಇರುವೆ ಗೂಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವ, ವಿವಿಧ ರೀತಿಯ ಇರುವೆ  ಜಾತಿಗಳಿವೆ. ಇರುವೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಶಿಲೀಂಧ್ರಗಳ ಈ ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಸಂಬಂಧ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ತಿಳಿಯಲು ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಈ ಕೆಳಗಿನ ವಿವರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ..

Forager ants: All foragers are females! Their work is to discover the places around the nest in search of delicious, non-toxic greeneries. As soon they learn where the food is, they return to the home and bring other foragers by making trails of chemicals which other foragers can smell and follow. Once they reach the spot, they work together to cut the leaves into small sections and transport them back home.

ಕೆಲಸಗಾರ ಇರುವೆ: ಇರುವೆ ಗೂಡಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕೆಲಸಗಾರ ಇರುವೆಗಳೆಲ್ಲ ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಇರುವೆಗಳು. ರುಚಿಕರವಾದ, ವಿಷಕಾರಿಯಲ್ಲದ ಹಸಿರು ಎಲೆಗಳ ಹುಡುಕಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಗೂಡಿನ ಸುತ್ತ ಇರುವ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳನ್ನು ಕಂಡುಹಿಡಿಯುವುದೇ ಇವರ ಕೆಲಸ. ಆಹಾರ ಹುಡುಕಿ ಎಲ್ಲಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ತಿಳಿದ ತಕ್ಷಣ ಈ ಇರುವೆಗಳು ಒಂದು ರೀತಿಯ ರಾಸಾಯನಿಕವನ್ನು ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಇತರ ಕೆಲಸಗಾರರಿಗೆ ಸುದ್ದಿ ಮುಟ್ಟಿಸಿ ಅದೇ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುತ್ತವೆ. ನಂತರ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕೆಲಸಗಾರರು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿ ಎಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸಣ್ಣ ಸಣ್ಣ ಚೂರಾಗಿ ಕತ್ತರಿಸಿ ಗೂಡಿಗೆ ಸಾಗಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.

Guard ants: The leafcutter ants have many enemies in the deep forest; one among them is a small parasitic fly. These flies are too small to consume the leafcutter ant directly, but they can lay eggs on the heads of ants busy collecting food. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae burrow into the ant’s head, finally killing her. So, the main role of the guard ants is to protect the foragers from the parasitic fly by getting a free relaxing ride on the foragers.

ರಕ್ಷಕ ಇರುವೆ: ದಟ್ಟ ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಈ ಎಲೆ ಕತ್ತರಿಸುವ ಇರುವೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಅನೇಕ ಶತೃಗಳು. ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು  ಪರಾವಲಂಬಿ ನೊಣ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ನೊಣದ ಗಾತ್ರ ಬಹಳ ಚಿಕ್ಕದ್ದು ಆದಕಾರಣ ಇರುವೆಗಳನ್ನು ಈ ನೊಣಗಳಿಂದ ನುಂಗಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ, ಯಾವಾಗ ಕೆಲಸಗಾರ ಇರುವೆಗಳು ತಮ್ಮ ಆಹಾರವನ್ನು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸುವ ಕಾರ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಗ್ನರಾಗೀರುತಾರೆಯೋ ಆ ಸಂದರ್ಭವನ್ನು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಈ ನೊಣ, ಇರುವೆಯ ತಲೆಯ ಒಳಗಡೆ ತನ್ನ ಮೊಟ್ಟೆಯನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟುಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ನಂತರ ಆ ಮೊಟ್ಟೆ ಮರಿಯಾಗಿ ಇರುವೆಯ ತಲೆಯ ಒಳಗಡೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ ಇರುವೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ.  ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ, ರಕ್ಷಕ ಇರುವೆಗಳ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಾತ್ರವೆಂದರೆ, ಪರಾವಲಂಬಿ ನೊಣದಿಂದ ಕೆಲಸಗಾರ ಇರುವೆಗಳನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸುವುದು. ಈ ರೀತಿ ರಕ್ಷಿಸುವುದರ  ಮೂಲಕ, ಕೆಲಸಗಾರರ ಮೇಲೆ ಕುಳಿತು  ಉಚಿತ ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತಿ ಸವಾರಿ ಪಡೆಯುವುದು.

Gardener/Nurse ants: In the colony, ants basically don’t eat the leaves. Instead, the leaves are used to cultivate a highly nutritious fungus that can be consumed. A group of young ants clean and take care of entire fungus gardens. They are called gardeners. These ants also play the role of nurses where they take care of the entire family (eggs, larvae and pupae).

ತೋಟಗಾರರು / ದಾದಿ ಇರುವೆಗಳು: ಗೂಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವೆಗಳು ಮೂಲತಃ ಎಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ತಿನ್ನುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಬದಲಿಗೆ, ಈ ಎಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪೌಷ್ಟಿಕಾಂಶದಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ  ಶಿಲೀಂಧ್ರವನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಲು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೆ. ಯುವ ಇರುವೆಗಳ ಗುಂಪೊಂದು ಶಿಲೀಂಧ್ರ ತೋಟಗಳ ಆರೈಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ವಚ್ಛತೆಗಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸಮಾಡುತ್ತವೆ  ಅವರನ್ನು ತೋಟಗಾರರು ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಾಗು ಈ ಗುಂಪಿನ ಇರುವೆಗಳು ದಾದಿಯಾಗಿಯೂ ಕೂಡ ಕಾರ್ಯ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿ, ಇಡೀ ಕುಟುಂಬವನ್ನು (ಮೊಟ್ಟೆಗಳು ಹಾಗು ಮರಿಗಳು) ಆರೈಕೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೆ.

Excavator ants: Ant nests are made up of many chambers that they use for different purposes connected by small passageways. Among them are many chambers dedicated for the fungus garden. This is one of the favourite places where young ones become adults and also where the queen lives. The main functions of excavators are: digging garbage chambers (where dead foragers, waste food and common trash are taken). The also expand the colony as the number increases.

ಅಗೆಯುವ ಇರುವೆ: ಇರುವೆ ಗೂಡುಗಳು ಅನೇಕ ಕೋಣೆಗಳಿಂದ ಮಾಡಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿವೆ ಹಾಗು ವಿವಿಧ ರೀತಿಯ ಉದ್ದೇಶಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಬಳಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ಕೋಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಶಿಲೀಂಧ್ರ ತೋಟಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಮುಡಿಪಾಗಿಡಲಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಇರುವೆಗಳು ಬೆಳೆದು ದೊಡ್ಡವಾಗಲು ಮತ್ತು ರಾಣಿ ಇರುವೆ ವಾಸಿಸಲು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುವ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳ ಇರುವೆ ಗೂಡಿನ ಅತಿ ನೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಜಾಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು. ಅಗೆಯುವ ಇರುವೆಗಳ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಕೆಲಸಗಳೆಂದರೆ, ಕಸದ ಕೋಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಅಗೆಯುವುದು (ಸತ್ತ ಇರುವೆಗಳು, ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯ ಆಹಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಕಸವನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಶೇಖರಿಸುತ್ತವೆ). ಹಾಗು ಗೂಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವೆಗಳ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗುತ್ತಿದಂತೆ ಗೂಡಿನ ಗಾತ್ರವನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.

Trash Handler ants: No one wants to live in a garbage heap,  including leafcutter ants. Nevertheless, leafcutter ant colonies also produce a lot of trash like dead ants, dangerous molds, etc. The collected trash must be cleaned to avoid the spread of infection. As the ants live together, the chance of spreading infection is very high. That’s the reason the excavators dig huge chambers deep into the soil  – to dispose the trash produced by the colony. These are the exceptional chambers in the colony where only trash handling workers can visit with dead, deceased and unclean matter. The trash handlers are so selfless that they avoid important places in the nest like the fungal garden, the place where the queen and brood live. By doing this they avoid spreading infectious diseases to the nest.

ಕಸ ನಿರ್ವಾಹಕ ಇರುವೆ: ಯಾರೂ ಕಸದ ರಾಶಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸಲು ಬಯಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ನಮ್ಮ ಎಲೆ ಕತ್ತರಿಸುವ ಇರುವೆಗಳು ಕೂಡ. ಎಲ್ಲರಂತೆ, ಇವು ಕೂಡ ಕಸವನ್ನ (ಸತ್ತ ಇರುವೆಗಳು, ಸೋಂಕನ್ನು ಹರಡುವ ಶಿಲಿಂಧ್ರಗಳು..) ಉತ್ಪತ್ತಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಈ ಕಸದಿಂದ ಬರುವ ಸೋಂಕಿನ ಹರಡುವಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ತಡೆಯಲು ಕಸವನ್ನು ಸ್ವಚ್ಛಗೊಳಿಸಬೇಕು. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಇರುವೆಗಳು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಜೀವಿಗಳಾಗಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಸೋಂಕು ಹರಡುವ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆ ತುಂಬಾ ವೇಗವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದೇ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ, ಮಣ್ಣು ಅಗೆಯುವ ಇರುವೆಗಳು, ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕೋಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕಸವನ್ನು ಹಾಕಲು ಸಹಾಯಮಾಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಆ ಕೋಣೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇವಲ ಕಸದ ನಿರ್ವಾಹಕರಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಪ್ರವೇಶ.  ಈ ಗುಂಪಿನ ಇರುವೆಗಳು ಬಹಳ ನಿಸ್ವಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು. ಅಪ್ಪಿತಪ್ಪಿಯೂ ಈ ಕಸ ನಿರ್ವಾಹಕರು ಗೂಡಿನ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಾದ ಶಿಲಿಂಧ್ರ ತೋಟಗಳು, ರಾಣಿ ಹಾಗು ಇತರೆ ಮರಿಗಳು ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಜಾಗಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದರಿಂದ, ಸಾಂಕ್ರಾಮಿಕ ಕಾಯಿಲೆಗಳ ಹರಡುವಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಗೂಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತಪ್ಪುತ್ತವೆ.

Soldier ant: These are important and the biggest group of workers in the colony. The key role of these soldier ants is to protect the colony using their resilient jaws. Sometimes they sacrifice their lives to guard the queen and brood from any danger.

ಸೈನಿಕ ಇರುವೆ: ಇವು ಅತಿ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಹಾಗು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಗುಂಪಿನ ಕಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಇರುವೆಗಳು. ಈ ಗುಂಪಿನ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಕೆಲಸವೆಂದರೆ, ತಮ್ಮ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾದ ದವಡೆಯನ್ನ ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಗೂಡಿನ ರಕ್ಷಣೆ ಮಾಡುವುದು. ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಾಣವನ್ನೇ ಪಣಕ್ಕಿಟ್ಟು ರಾಣಿ ಹಾಗು ಇಡೀ ಗೂಡಿನ ರಕ್ಷಣೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತವೆ.

Queen ant: The main pillar of the leafcutter ant colony is their queen! She is the egg laying machine, dedicating her life to increase the brood number.    Although she is one of the most important members of the family, she does not give any command to any workers. The smart workers are intelligent by birth and already know how to take care of the nest and the queen. So, queen’s only job is to lay eggs!

ರಾಣಿ ಇರುವೆ: ಇರುವೆ ಗೂಡಿನ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಸ್ತಂಭವೆಂದರೆ ರಾಣಿ ಇರುವೆ. ಅದರ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಮೊಟ್ಟೆ ಇಡಲು ಮುಡಿಪಾಗಿಟ್ಟಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ರಾಣಿ ಕುಟುಂಬದ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಸದಸ್ಯೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು ಕೂಡ, ಯಾವುದೇ ಕಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಇರುವೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಅದು ಯಾವುದೇ ಆಜ್ಞೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ, ಚತುರ ಕಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಇರುವೆಗಳು ಹುಟ್ಟಿನಿಂದ ಬುದ್ಧಿವಂತರಾಗಿದ್ದು ಗೂಡಿನ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಣಿಯ ಆರೈಕೆಯನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ, ರಾಣಿ ಏಕ ಮಾತ್ರ ಕೆಲಸ ಮೊಟ್ಟೆಗಳನ್ನು ಇಡುವುದು!

The mutualism between ants and the fungus is constantly evolving, and the ants have established ways to keep this mutualism active for thousands of years.
